About the course

What is Integrated Water Management? How can it allow us to solve complex water management problems now and in the future? And how is Integrated Water Management still relevant as we grapple with challenges such as climate change, the water-food-energy nexus, and the need for socially inclusive processes?

This course will introduce participants to the theory and principles of Integrated Water Management (IWM). It will investigate conceptual frameworks used to critically analyse water management problems and drive sustainable solutions. There will also be a focus on the relevance of context-specific interventions and stakeholder participation which is essential to IWM in practice. International case studies will allow participants to gain applied knowledge of IWM.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course participants will have gained knowledge in the fundamental aspects of IWM:

  • The history and evolution of IWM theory and practice
  • Principles and frameworks that guide IWM
  • Key biophysical and socio-economic processes in the water cycle
  • Understanding the complexities associated with water management
  • Why integration and systems approaches are required to deal with social and ecological complexities necessary for achieving sustainable development
  • Understanding of challenges associated with the implementation of IWM and the awareness of how challenges have been overcome in practice.
